As specialists in periodontics and dental implants, our team is primarily interested in two things,
the first and the most important of which is saving your teeth. Many people don’t know what a
periodontist is, much less, what to expect when they see one. A periodontist is a dentist with
advanced education in the treatment of gum or ‘periodontal disease’. Most people lose their
teeth due to complications from this affliction. More often than not this loss is unnecessary, and
could have been prevented through treatment and education.

Dr. David Davenport graduated at the top of his class from the Temple University School of Dentistry. He continued his training at the Medical College of Georgia-Georgia Health Sciences University, where he completed a three-year residency in periodontics and dental implants, serving as chief resident his final year. Dr. David Davenport’s specialty program focused on periodontal and dental implant surgery, oral pathology, and overall periodontal care. During his residency training, Dr. David Davenport completed a Master of Science degree in Oral Biology and served the U.S. Military by providing periodontal care to veterans at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center. He is currently and adjunct clinical professor at the Georgia Health Sciences University.
Simply put, a dental implant is a new tooth, designed just for you from a dental ceramic material which is permanently connected in the space where your original tooth once was.
Your dentist will clean and prepare the space where your original tooth was and insert a titanium screw into the bone. Your new ceramic implant tooth is attached to the titanium screw for a secure fit.
Having good quality bone is a key to implant success; however, many periodontal patients have damaged bone. Periodontal disease, aging, pressure from grinding teeth or wearing dentures, trauma or injury can all lead to insufficient bone, making it difficult to place dental implants. Fortunately, Dr. Davenport is able to correct this problem for many patients with tissue and bone regeneration procedures to restore lost tissue.
Piezosurgery® is an innovative technology that empowers surgeons, like Dr. Davenport, to perform procedures in a more focused and selective manner than using traditional dental instruments. Piezosurgery® is a relatively new technique that utilizes ultrasonic vibration. A piezosurgical tip vibrates at high speeds, allowing clean cutting with precise incisions.
All-On-4 Dental Implants are a revolutionary new dental procedure designed to offer a permanent tooth replacement for individuals suffering from missing teeth across an entire row of teeth. Tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially in old age, and the short answer is that dentures are often not the easiest or most comfortable solution for adults struggling with tooth loss. All-On-4 Dental Implants bring a unique procedure that secures a row of permanent implants on 4 anchor points. This unique procedure allows for a much lower price point than traditional Dental Implants and allows for a faster procedure.
Strong teeth are essential to not only your dental health, but also your whole body health. So when your teeth are not able to complete the functions you need them to achieve, the health of your whole body is at risk.
Dental implants are becoming more favorable for replacing missing and damaged teeth and advances in dental technologies have given us far greater opportunities to regain a health and beautiful smile than ever before.
Dr. Davenport has been specially trained and certified, and is licensed by the State of Georgia to perform conscious sedation for the comfort of his patients. In fact, many of his patients who are undergoing surgical procedures choose oral sedation for their personal comfort. If you are interested in this option, please discuss it with Dr. Davenport at the time of scheduling, so that the appropriate prescriptions may be provided. The medicines produce a calming and relaxing response, and have a mild amnesiac effect. All patients who use sedation must have a caregiver drive them to and from the appointment, and must be in satisfactory health before any drugs are administered.
Most dental treatments for periodontal disease do not require surgery. More often than not, good dental cleaning habits and regular dental checkups will ensure that periodontal disease does not develop.
But despite the best efforts at maintaining good dental cleaning habits, or when tissues, gums, teeth or bones are damaged by the effects of periodontal disease, there are times when surgical treatment is necessary to correct the damage caused by periodontal disease.
Following any periodontal treatment for disease or with implants, many patients are prescribed a periodontal maintenance program. Periodontal maintenance therapy is offered by the skilled hygienists at Peachtree Periodontics and Dental Implants. Gum disease is a chronic problem, much like hypertension or diabetes. Fortunately, regular periodontal teeth cleaning and maintenance may help keep periodontal disease under control. Even patients who have previously undergone surgical or non-surgical treatment will benefit from regular maintenance.
Scaling & Root Planing is the most common non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. Special instruments are used to remove bacteria from the infected pockets around the teeth and below the gum line. This is often referred to as a “deep cleaning,” and when done by a periodontist, may be the only treatment a patient needs.
Many times, the early stages of periodontal disease are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy. Non-surgical treatment often precedes surgical therapy, even in complex cases. If necessary, a two-step process is done to improve the overall tissue quality prior to surgery and, to further help limit the areas requiring surgery.
As the Periodontal Disease progresses, the plaque will become harder and less likely to be brushed away with regular teeth brushing. This harder plaque is called tartar. As the tartar builds up it begins to create a space between your teeth and gums and this gives the bacterial infection more room to advance into the sensitive areas below your gums.
A frenum is a band of tissue that holds down or connects the lip, cheeks, or tongue. These bands connect the tongue to the floor of the mouth (the lingual frenum), and the lip to the gum in front of the teeth (the labial frenum).
Peachtree Periodontics and Dental Implants provides in-office digital x-rays and 3D scanning to evaluate and analyse dental and facial anatomy when treatment planning. This state-of-the-art technology allows Dr. Davenport to optimize implant treatment and placement, and permits him to select the most suitable type and size of implant.
Crown lengthening is a simple surgical procedure where additional tooth structure is exposed by adjusting and re-contouring the position of the gum around an affected tooth. This lengthening provides additional tooth structure for your dentist to affix the dental restoration (filling or crown).
Over time, our teeth and gums react and respond to the wear that we put them through. The soft tissues that comprise the gums that our teeth are seated in may respond by pulling back away from the tooth. This leaves more of the tooth’s surface exposed to food, beverages, and even the air that passes over when you breathe in and out. A dental procedure called a Cosmetic Gingival Grafting / Gum Lift can be performed in the periodontist’s office to resolve this.
